One of the major parties in Sri Lanka’s coalition government, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to leave the unity government, reports from Colombo say.
It has been reported that the decision was taken after a discussion held this evening between the United National Party leaders Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and the President at the President’s official residence.
It was reported that the three leaders discussed the prevailing unstable political situation and the harm that would bring to the country.
Accordingly President Sirisena will seek the Supreme Court opinion on appointing a new Prime Minister, a SLFP MP and deputy speaker Thilanga Sumathipala has told Ada Derana.
However, a UNP Minister has told the local media that the SLFP doesn’t have the majority in the parliament to form a government.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the President Sirisena was to cancel the parliament session that was scheduled for tomorrow.
However, the Secretary to the President Austin Fernando has said that the parliament sessions would not be postponed and the session will be held as scheduled.
