The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will hold its May Day rally this year in Batticaloa on 7th May, Minister of Ports and Aviation Mahinda Samarasinghe said.
The SLFP Central Committee has taken this decision during the meeting headed by the President Maithripala Sirisena, Tuesday.
At a press briefing held in Colombo Wednesday Minister Samarasinghe said a committee headed by Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva has been appointed to organize the May Day Rally.
According to the Minister, a ceremony will also be held at BMICH Colombo on 1st of May to felicitate the services rendered by late SLFP stalwarts such as T.B. Ilangarathna and Alevi Moulana.
The Minister said the party reorganizing activities will be carried out under the patronage of the President.
He further said that the party is ready to fight for the 16 SLFP members who left the government resigning from ministerial posts and they should be given their ministerial posts again.
“We are ready to fight for our 16 members and if they return to the government they should be given back their minister posts,” he said.
He clarified that the 16 members didn’t leave the party.
“There was no discussion about joining the Opposition at the Central Committee meeting. All 39 of us are of the opinion that we should be with the President. The 16 members left the government, they did not leave the party,” he added.
“Ministerial posts should be given back to our 16 members who left the government if they return to the government we are ready to fight for them,” said Minister of Ports and Aviation Mahinda Samarasinghe.
