The General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has handed over the letter on party’s stance regarding the appointment of a UPFA MP for the post of Opposition Leader to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya will submit the UPFA stance at the Party Leaders Meeting to be convened at 3.p.m. in Parliament today.
UPFA party leaders have taken the decision at a meeting held under the patronage of the President yesterday.
A letter signed by eight UPFA Members of Parliament requesting the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament post to be given to UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardena has been submitted to the Speaker on 30th July.
The Speaker in return referred the matter to the UPFA since all those signed the request were UPFA members.
According to the Constitution, the Leader of the Opposition should be given to the party with the highest number of seats and not part of the government.
