Sri Lanka State Minister injured in road accident

Sri Lanka State Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils, Member of Parliament for Digamadulla District Mrs. Sriyani Wijewickrema has been injured in a road accident today early morning, the police said.

According to the Peradeniya Police, the Mercedes Benz vehicle she was traveling in ran off the road in the wee hours of this morning at around 3 am and hit a tree along the Colombo-Kandy road.

The Minister suffered non-life threatening injuries and was admitted to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.

The only other people in the vehicle at the time of the accident were her security officer and the driver of the vehicle. They were not injured, the police said.

The State Minister’s injuries are not serious, the Hospital sources said.

Mrs. Wijewickrema was appointed as the State Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government by President Maithripala Sirisena last month when she joined Sri Lanka Freedom party (SLFP) in supporting the President. Earlier she supported the joint opposition.
