Suspects of Mattegoda bank robbery arrested

Four suspects have been arrested in connection to the robbery of a state bank in Mattegoda, by a special team of the Mount Lavinia Police, early this morning (30).

On 26th October, 3 armed men robbed cash and gold jewellery from the branch of a state bank at Mattegoda. The suspects arriving in a car and armed with a pistol had made off with Rs 9.3 million in cash and jewelry worth Rs 49.3 million.

The suspects had also taken the bank’s CCTV camera storage system with them before fleeing the scene.

Information has been uncovered that the car used by the suspects had been stolen from a cab service after strangling its driver.

Along with the 3 main suspects, Dilan Lalinda Sandaruwan (34), Sampath Indika Kumara (40) and Selvaraja Prabhu Murthi (41), another person has also been arrested, stated Police.

The fourth arrestee, Chaminda Sampath Kumara (38), the brother-in-law of the first suspect, had only assisted the robbery by discarding the stolen CCTV camera storage (DVR system), stated Police Media Spokesperson.

Reportedly, the stolen cash and jewelry have been found buried behind one of the suspect’s house.

The CCTV camera storage, which had been thrown into the Kelani River from Hanwella area, is being searched for by divers, according to the Police Media Spokesperson.
