Striking postal employees to launch indefinite fast from today

The Joint Postal Trade Unions Front says they will launch an indefinite fast today opposite the Central Mail Exchange in Colombo. Co-convener of the trade union front Chinthaka Bandara told local media that they will launch an indefinite fast since the government has not given a satisfactory response to their demands yet. Post Master General Rohana Abeyratne has urged all the striking postal employees to end the trade union action and come for discussions to find a solution to their demands. Hambantota port workers call off fast unto death

Hambantota port workers have decided to call off their 'fast unto death' campaign today after receiving a favorable response from Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) to their demands. The protest fast was launched on January 9 demanding that the 438 employees of the Magampura Port be recruited by the Ports Authority or that they be compensated sufficiently. Eleven employees, including a female employee, had launched the protest, which continued until today (19). The protest fast was organized by the Hambantota Magampura Ports Employees' Union. CEB employees continue fast for fourth day

Thirty-two Ceylon Electricity Board trade unions are still engaged in the fast they began opposite the CEB head office. The fast has been continuing for the past three days. Trade unions are staging the fast based on issues including the increasing of the basic salary, and allowances only for higher grade employees of the CEB. The Secretary to the National Workers’ Association, Ajith Devapriya, stated they will launch a strike if their demands are not met.
