The University Grants Commission (UGC) emphasized that no organization has been given the authority to conduct degree courses at a university known as the ‘Sharia University’ or the Batticaloa Campus.
This is stated in a communiqué issued by the UGC with regard to several news reports published on an organization known as the Sharia University that is being constructed in a village called Poonani in Batticaloa district.
Questions have been raised as to whether the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Higher Education Ministry have granted approval for the courses of study at the university.
Issuing a media statement, the UGC said, the attention of the University Grants Commission is drawn to several news items regarding an organization referred to as the Sharia University or Batticaloa Campus located in Poonani, in the Eastern Province.
“The Commission wishes to state that, as per the University Act of 1978 (as amended), the University Grants Commission is mandated only to plan and coordinate University education and regulate administration of 15 state universities that come under the purview of the University Grants commission,” the statement said.
“The University Grants Commission categorically states that no organization by the name of Sharia University or the Batticaloa Campus has ever requested permission, nor given authority by the Commission, to conduct degrees.”
