The majority party of Sri Lanka parliament, the United National Party (UNP) will submit a vote of confidence motion in parliament today to show the party’s leader Ranil Wickremesinghe commands the confidence of Parliament to function as Prime Minister.
UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa will present the motion to the House when it convenes at 1.00 p.m. today.
This motion of confidence signed by the UNP Parliamentarians Sajith Premadasa, Ravi Karunanayake, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Lakshman Kiriella, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Palani Digambaram, Mangala Samaraweera and Rishad Bathiudeen.
The UNP expects 117 MPs including the 103 MPs of the United National Front (UNF) and the 14 MPs of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to vote for the motion. The Marxist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has said that it will not support the motion.
A motion signed by seven UNF MPs calling for the President to take future actions in accordance with Article 48 (2) of the Constitution is also to be presented to the Parliament today.
Meanwhile, a party leaders’ meeting headed by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has been scheduled to commence at 11.30 a.m. at the Parliament Complex to discuss the other proposals that should be included in today’s agenda.
The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) parliamentarians will boycott the Parliament once again today.
