Use alternative roads to Kandy – RDA

One lane of the Pahala Kadugannawa road section on the Colombo-Kandy main road was reopened for traffic from 12.00 noon yesterday (17).

RDA Director General Sardha Weerakoon requested motorists to use alternative routes as much as possible to reduce congestion on the road.

RDA Director General Weerakoon requested people to use the following roads as alternative routes to prevent road congestion that could be resultant from using only a single lane at Kadugannawa:

Alternative routes from Colombo to Kandy are: 1. Ambepussa-Kurunegala – Katugastota to Kandy road, 2. Kegalle – Polgahawela – Kurunegala – Katugastota to Kandy road.

3. Mawanella – Rambukkana – Hatharaliyadda – Galagedara to Kandy road, 4. Mawanella – Hemmathagama – Gampola -Peradeniya to Kandy road.

The RDA Director General said police and RDA officials will provide guidance to motorists to use the alternative routes and in the meantime with the instructions of the officials of the NBRO the Colombo-Kandy road would be made fully available for use once safety of the users is ensured.

Vehicular movement on Colombo-Kandy was suspended on Nov 10 following an earth slip near the 98th Mile Post of the Colombo – Kandy road. RDA officials and experts from the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) later inspected the area to assess the situation and the stretch of road remained closed due to the prevailing adverse weather.
