16 SLFP ministers voted in favor of no-confidence motion against Sri Lanka PM resign from posts

Sri Lanka Freedom party (SLFP) ministers who voted in favor of the no-confidence motion brought by the Joint Opposition against the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have resigned from their ministerial portfolios of the national government.

State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told the local media that the SLFP cabinet, state and the deputy ministers who voted for the no-confidence motion and deputy speaker resigned from their posts and handed over the letters of resignation to President Maithripala Sirisena a short while ago.

The United National Party (UNP) the majority party in the unity government has complained to the President that the government cannot function with the ministers who voted against the Prime Minister and the government.

Mr. Abeywardena said that the President gave permission for the SLFP ministers to resign from their posts after a discussion this with the President this evening and the 16 ministers, who voted for the motion, handed over their resignation letters to the President.

SLFP media spokesman Dilan Perera said that the ministers and parliamentarians however, would support the President while in parliament.

Following are the SLFP ministers resigned:

Cabinet Ministers – Susil Premajayantha, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, WDJ Seneviratne, Chandima Weerakkody, and SB Dissanayake

State Ministers – Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Dilan Perera, Sudarshini Fernandopulle, Susantha Punchinilame, and TB Ekanayake,

Deputy Ministers – Sumedha G. Jayasena, Anuradha Jayaratne, Tharanath Basnayake, and Lakshman Wasantha Perera

Deputy speaker – Thilanga Sumathipala
