Two more Navy personnel arrested over abduction

The Criminal Investigations Department has arrested two more Navy personnel over their involvement in the abduction of 11 youth in 2008 and 2009.

 

Police Media Spokesman Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara informed NewsRadio that the two Navy officers were arrested last night after being questioned by the CID.

 

SP Gunasekara said one Navy personnel is a Minor Officer and the other is a Leading Seaman.

 

The CID is conducting investigations into the abduction and disappearance of 11 youth between 2008 and 2009.

 

The Police Media Spokesman said the Minor Officer was arrested on four charges including demanding a ransom from relatives of the kidnapped youth to release them unharmed, demanding a Rs.500,000 ransom from the wife of one of the abducted youth and murdering the youth.

 

The Leading Seaman is charged with kidnapping the 11 youth, detaining them illegally, demanding ransoms and ordering the murder of the 11 youth.

 

Former Navy Lieutenant Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi alias ‘Navy Sampath’ who was arrested over the abduction and disappearance of the 11 youth earlier is currently in remand custody until the 19th of December.
