Five Covid-19 infected inmates had broken out of a Covid-19 treatment facility located in Gallella in Polonnaruwa.
The break-out had taken place at 03:30 AM on Thursday (Dec 31), said Police Spokesperson, DIG Ajith Rohana.
The escapees have pending cases in the courts and a majority of them are drug addicts, he added.
He further said that the Sri Lanka Police and the Security Forces have launched a joint search operation in Polonnaruwa to locate the escapees.
Support from the general public is requested to apprehend the escapees.
Investigations are led by the SSP of Polonnaruwa.
