Shiranthi to be Taken to National Eye Hospital

Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa will not be moved to a private hospital for treatment but will instead be taken to the National Eye Hospital in Colombo on the morning of October 9, NEWSLINE understands.

Rajapaksa, who is presently in remand custody, requires continuing treatment for an eye condition and was seen leaving court with her eye heavily bandaged.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court had earlier directed prison authorities to facilitate treatment for the condition. Her lawyers had told court that she was receiving treatment at a private hospital, and reports on October 8 indicated that arrangements were being made for her to be examined there.

NEWSLINE now has confirmation that she will not be transferred to a private hospital. Instead, arrangements have been made for her to be taken under prison custody to the National Eye Hospital, Colombo, on the morning of October 9.

Rajapaksa was remanded until October 13 following her arrest by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption in connection with an alleged Rs. 10 million transaction involving the Siriliya Saviya organisation. The allegations remain to be determined by court, and Rajapaksa denies wrongdoing.

The decision to use the National Eye Hospital means that her treatment will continue within the State health system while she remains a remand prisoner.

Be that as it may.
