Showers & winds to continue as south-west monsoon conditions establish

South-west monsoon conditions are gradually establishing over the island, hence, showery and windy conditions (particularly in the South-western part) are expected to continue, the Department of Meteorology said. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere particularly after 2.00pm. Heavy falls above 100 mm can be expected at some places particularly in Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kalutara district. Fairly heavy falls above 50mm can be expected at some places in Eastern, Uva and North-central Provinces. The “Pavithra Ganga” project will be implemented

The pollution levels in some of our waterways have reached unprecedented levels. As such, the “Pavithra Ganga” project will be implemented. This project will focus mainly on ensuring zero disposal of waste by factories into waterways over time. In this regard, initially, all the factories that dispose of their waste into the Kelani River will be given 5 years to implement eco-sustainable modes of disposal of waste. They will be supported through a concessionary credit facility. - Rs. 750 Mn

A flood protection wall to be constructed

The Kelani basin highlights the need to scale up the existing Climate Resilience Program with focus on mitigating urban flooding. As such, a flood protection wall will be constructed, in the interim. As a long term measure, new multi-purpose reservoirs will be built upstream at Wee Oya, Nawatha, Holombuwa and Reucastle to enhance the water retention capacity. A similar mechanism will be looked into with regard to other perennial rivers including, Kalu, Nilwala and Gin rivers. - Rs. 4,900 Mn

To discourage the use of Polythene and Plastic products, an excise duty of Rs. 10 per kilogramme for Plastic resins to be imposed.  The private sector to be incentivised to convert to environmentally friendly alternatives and to engage in manufacturing bags, packing materials etc. out of biodegradable materials such as banana fiber, palm leaves, coir, bamboo etc. - Rs. 75 Mn

Telecommunication towers to be reduced as part of govt Green initiative

It was announced that the number of telecommunication towers within Sri Lanka will be reduced as they are not environment-friendly. Minister Mangala Samaraweera stated that there are around 50,000 telecommunication towers in Sri Lanka and that a tax will be imposed to reduce their numbers. He further stated that this will be done to establish a virtually blue-green institution within Sri Lanka.
