AG appoints team of lawyers to address legal case backlog

The Attorney General’s Department has announced plans to appoint a team of experts tasked with expediting the trial process in courts, as the country deals with a backlog of legal cases from over the years.

According to AG Jayanatha Jayasooriya, a decision was made to appoint 30 lawyers for this purpose. The newly appointed lawyers will help in the swift hearing of cases on corruption and crime.

Furthermore, the department noted that with the permission of the parliamentary sub-committee, 100 lawyers are scheduled to be included in the 2018 recruitment window. The attorney general further singled out the lack of legal professionals in the department as the reason for the backlog of the country.
