Two ministries originally assigned to Harin Fernando MP and Malik Samarawickrama (Appointed MP) have been removed officially by Presidential proclamation from their other portfolios.
Originally Harin Fernando was assigned Telecommunications, Digital Infrastructure Foreign Employment and Sports.
At the same time Malik Samarawickrama, a very close confidante of Ranil Wickremesinghe, was assigned Development Strategies, International Trade and Science Technology and Research.
However on the 26th of December Presidential Proclamation has listed the two Ministries taken away from Fernando and Samarawickrama (Digital Infrastructure and Science, Technology and Research) and have been allocated to state Ministers Ajith Perera and Sujeeva Senasinghe.
In practice what this means is that Perera and Senasinghe have no Cabinet Ministers overseeing them and thus when they have matters t put forth before Cabinet, they will be specially invited.
To most this is an exercise in frustrating the 19th Amendment’s limit on the number of Ministers (30) done arguably to curry political expediency and keep the ship on an even keel.
