A committee of experts headed by the Chief Judicial Medical Officer of Colombo will examine the women who have lodged complaints against Dr. Mohamed Shafi, who is alleged of performing illegal sterilizations on women during their cesarean childbirths.
The Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the Criminal Investigation Department has recorded statements from 421 mothers, 26 doctors including 6 Visiting Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologists (VOGs) over the illegal sterilizations allegedly carried out by Dr. Shafi.
In addition, 69 nurses and 18 other hospital staff have also recorded statements with the CID over the incident, the spokesperson further said.
The women suspect that Dr. Shafi has performed an illegal surgical procedure during the cesarean delivery as they have been unable to conceive after childbirth.
Dr. Shafi is currently under arrest for unrelated charges under Money Laundering for amassing an unexplainable wealth.
