Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says he has instructed the Ministry of Home Affairs to commence provision of compensation to those affected by the gale force winds on last Friday (12) in Divulapitiya area of the Gampaha district from today.
Measures have been taken to hand over an advance of 10,000 rupees out of the total full compensation to the residents of every affected house from today. The total amount will be provided after completion of the preparations of relevant evaluations.
The Prime Minister has also instructed to estimate the damage caused to properties from the strong wind within two days.
The gale force winds blew across the area on last Friday completely damaged 190 houses in 13 Grama Niladhari divisions in Divulapitiya. More than 400 houses were partially damaged and over 2800 people have been affected. Two houses in the Attanagalla Divisional Secretariat Division were also damaged affecting 14 people.
The Ministry of Home Affairs says the valuation of houses has already started and the distribution of the assessed compensation will be paid in the next week.
The Ministry asked the affected people to inform the government as soon as possible if they have not informed of the damages to houses or property. The affected families can contact the hotline number 1902 of the Ministry of Home Affairs in the event of a weather emergency.
