Education Minister says will recruit permanent principals to national schools promptly

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said in parliament on Tuesday that the gazette notification for the recruitment of permanent principals to national schools in the island will be issued in the next few days.

He said many problems have risen due to not following the proper procedure in recruiting officials into the system during the previous administration.

Responding to a question raised by parliamentarian Douglas Devananda, the Minister said interviews had already been held to fill vacancies in 232 national schools.

However, the Minister pointed out that the relevant interview boards had informed that there were no principals with satisfactory qualifications to meet the criteria stipulated for the posts.

At present, the principal duties of those schools are covered by the Grades Officers.

Accordingly, in order to find an urgent solution in those national schools, necessary documents have already been sent to the Education Committee of the Public Service Commission to call for interviews for the recruitment of Principals, the Minister said.
