Party leaders in the Joint Opposition (JO) have not been present at a meeting of the JO MPs that was convened last evening at the residence of former President MP Mahinda Rajapaksa.
JO MP Dinesh Gunawardena, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila have failed to attend yesterday’s meeting, sources in the JO said.
However, according to information received by the media, the party leaders have refrained from participating in the meeting called by Rajapaksa as a mark of protest against some members of the JO who have refrained from voting at the election for the Deputy Speaker in parliament even after Rajapaksa had clearly asked the JO to support UPFA MP Sudharshani Fernandopulle to be elected to the post.
