JVP hands over 20A draft proposal

The JVP has handed over the draft proposal of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution as a Private Members Bill to the Speaker of House.

The Office of the Speaker said Leader of the JVP Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and MPs Sunil Handunnetti and Nihal Galappaththi handed over the Private Members Bill.

The draft proposal includes proposal such as the abolishment of the Executive Presidency.

Meanwhile, A tense situation broke out in Parliament over the remand of United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Sanath Nishantha.

Joint Opposition group leader MP Dinesh Gunewardene directed Speaker Karu Jayasuriya’s attention to MP Sanath Nishantha’s privileges being violated.

The Speaker and Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella responded to the charges.

MP Dinesh Gunawardene said Parliamentarian Sanath Nishantha’s matter is based on a complaint lodged by a Pradeshiya Sabha member over him establishing a Sunday school within a temple.

He stressed he was not not speaking regarding the case.

We ask you to intervene and grant bail for MP Sanath Nishantha.

In response Minister Kiriella said he was surprised at MP Dinesh Gunewardene’s request. He charged they are attempting to influence Court adding they cannot grant bail.

He stressed it was wrong to speak of such a matter in Parliament as it is an on-going hearing.

Also responding Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya said he had discussed the matter with the Minister of Justice.

He said even she agreed this was an unfair matter.

The Speaker said he spoke to the MP as well and ensured that he be given everything he needs including medical supplies.

Speaker Jayasuirya said he would speak to the Minister again regarding the issue.
