SLPP MP Dullas Alahapperuma yesterday announced his candidacy for the vacant post of President.
Alahapperuma announced his decision to contest shortly after the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa from the post of President was announced.
Parliament will vote on 20 July to elect a new President with nominations to be filed on 19 July.

Alahapperuma said he expects the support of all MPs so that he can take on the task of building a peaceful and developed Sri Lanka democratically with sincerity and inclusivity.
His move comes as SLPP formally announced its support to Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the parliamentary vote to choose the next President. The twin moves also confirm the split within SLPP.
