The suspects who have been remanded are the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Crimes Division of the Negombo Division Police Station who is a Senior Inspector, and a Deputy Inspector, two Sergeants, and five Police Constables attached to the Division.

As the victims had informed the court that they are capable of identifying the suspects and requested to hold an identification parade, the court had remanded the suspects taking into consideration their request.

The Eheliyagoda Police had informed the court that the suspects had attended a funeral in the Pannila area in Eheliyagoda on Tuesday (14) and had thereafter gone to bathe in the river, following which the brawl had taken place.

They further revealed that the officers had engaged in an argument with a group of area residents who were also bathing in the river, which had resulted in a brawl as the argument had escalated, injuring the area residents.

At the end of the hearing, the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court ordered the suspects to be produced for an identification parade on the 27th of December.
