Success, whether in business or sport, is rarely defined by a single achievement. It is built through resilience, discipline, strategic thinking, and the ability to persevere through challenges. Few individuals embody these qualities more clearly than Nishan Sumanadheera, whose career in Sri Lanka’s corporate sector and personal achievements on the golf course stand as a testament to the power of endurance.
Over the past two decades, Nishan Sumanadheera has established himself as one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced corporate strategists and dealmakers. Having facilitated and advised on major corporate transactions involving some of Sri Lanka’s leading conglomerates, including LOLC, Softlogic, and Asia Capital he has played a significant role in corporate acquisitions, restructuring initiatives, and business transformations across multiple industries.
His professional journey has seen him serve on the boards of numerous Sri Lankan companies while representing investors and strategic partners from Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and China. Through mergers, acquisitions, financial restructuring, and investment advisory mandates, he has consistently demonstrated that long-term success is achieved through patience, vision, and perseverance rather than short-term gains.
These same qualities were on full display in 2018 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

A Remarkable Test of Endurance
In the storied history of the Royal Colombo Golf Club, there are achievements remembered not merely for the score recorded but for the spirit in which they were accomplished. One such achievement belongs to Nishan Sumanadheera, who undertook the extraordinary challenge of playing 90 holes of golf in a single day.
Beginning at dawn and continuing throughout the day, Nishan pushed himself physically and mentally across the demanding course. By the time fading light and deteriorating weather conditions brought the effort to a close, he had completed an impressive 84 holes, a feat that remains one of the most talked-about endurance challenges undertaken by a member of the club.
For Nishan, the challenge was never about setting records or seeking recognition. It was about testing personal limits and demonstrating the value of commitment and determination.
“Endurance is not simply about physical strength. It is about maintaining focus, discipline, and composure when circumstances become difficult. Whether in business or golf, success often comes from continuing when others decide to stop,” he reflects.
Lessons from the Fairways and the Boardroom
Those who know Nishan understand that the same mindset which guided him through complex corporate transactions also guided him through his marathon day on the golf course.
Throughout his career, he has navigated challenging negotiations, corporate restructurings, and high-value transactions requiring patience, strategy, and resilience. Similarly, during his 84-hole challenge, every hole demanded concentration, decision-making, and the ability to remain composed despite fatigue.
The experience reinforced a philosophy that has shaped both his professional and personal life: progress is achieved one step at a time.
“Whether you’re closing a major corporate acquisition, restructuring a company, or standing on the first tee before a long day ahead, the principle remains the same. Focus on the next challenge, execute well, and keep moving forward,” says Nishan.
The Fairways of Endurance
Upon Colombo’s storied greens,
Where countless golfers come and go,
One man walked farther than the rest,
With steadfast heart and measured flow.
Eighty-five holes from dawn till dusk,
Through heat and fatigue he played his part;
Not for glory, praise, or fame,
But for the challenge of the heart.
Today that record proudly stands,
A feat of endurance, rare and true;
With future tests now laid to rest,
Its place in history only grew.
And still the fairways softly tell,
As evening shadows gently fall:
Nishan Sumanadheera’s name remains,
A record destined to outlast all.

A Legacy Beyond Numbers
While his corporate achievements have contributed to the growth and transformation of numerous businesses, and his golf challenge remains a memorable chapter in Royal Colombo Golf Club history, Nishan’s true legacy lies in the example he sets.
His story demonstrates that endurance matters.
In business, endurance allows leaders to navigate uncertainty and create lasting value. In sport, endurance enables individuals to push beyond perceived limitations. In life, endurance is often the difference between those who achieve their goals and those who abandon them along the way.
For members of the Royal Colombo Golf Club and for many within Sri Lanka’s corporate community, Nishan Sumanadheera’s journey serves as a reminder that success is not measured solely by outcomes but by the determination, resilience, and commitment displayed throughout the journey.
His achievements across boardrooms and fairways alike illustrate a simple yet powerful truth: enduring success belongs to those who possess the courage to continue when the path becomes difficult.
