Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Tuesday signed the proposed criteria for media to be presented to parliament on the conduct of an unbiased and just election according to the constitution.
The Prime Minister signed the documents, after engaging in religious observance, as his inaugural duty of the New Year, yesterday at the Temple Trees.
This criteria to media were announced by the Election Commission through a government gazette on 4th December. The guidelines are aimed at ensuring a fair and impartial election according to the Constitution.
The guidelines which have been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers will gain legal status once they are approved in parliament. All media divisions will be bound by the criteria and it is their responsibility and duty to abide by them.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that a new electoral system has been introduced and the political parties who do not bag seats in the political institutions, though they have a good deal of votes will be able to secure positions in such institutions under a new system, according to a proportional method.
He urged all the political parties to extend their support for the initiative. The Premier also wished a happy New Year to all.
