Secretary to the Ministry of Posts, Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs RMDB Meegasmulla said the demands made by the postal trade unions are accepted but the strike launched by them while seeking solutions to their demands is unfair.
He said the cabinet of ministers has appointed a sub-committee headed by Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama to provide solutions to the strikers’ demands of the strike. The committee is presently seeking solutions to these demands in consultation with the relevant agencies including the Salaries and Wages Commission of the Ministry of Public Administration and the Department of Management.
“In such a situation, the boycott of postal services by the postal trade unions is was unfair,” said the Secretary to the Ministry of Postal Services addressing a media briefing today.
The Secretary explained that the demands of the postal workers are based on the Public Administration Circular issued in 2006, which affects the promotions in the postal, railways and other government departments and solving this issue is very complicated. However, the official said they expect to find a solution in the next few days.
Postmaster General Rohana Abeyratne said that the public have been greatly inconvenienced due to the strike since the services performed by post offices such as payment of pensions, elderly allowances and welfare benefits and payment of traffic fines are suspended.
Foreign mail distribution has also stopped and many containers of postal items have been stuck at the Katunayake airport.
Sri Lanka Postal Service has been ranked 9th among 193 countries according to the classification of the International Postal Service, and this strike would create a black mark for the country’s postal service, the Postmaster General said.
Abeyratne said that the rumors that about 1.5 million letters have been piled up at post offices due to the strike are false and new letters have not been received after the strike was launched.
However, the Secretary Meegasmulla expressed hope that the postal workers would return to work next week.
