President raises seed potato subsidy, stops re-exporting of tea and black pepper

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that measures will be taken to increase the 50 percent subsidy for seed potatoes currently given to potato farmers to 100 percent.

The President said that re-exportation of tea and pepper will be stopped completely.

Addressing a public rally held in Badulla on Sunday, the President said re-export of tea had damaged the reputation of Sri Lankan tea in the international market and the industry is broken down.

He said the re-exportation of black pepper had resulted in low prices for peppers and measure would be taken to protect the local farmer.

He said that although he has given the task of managing the country’s economy to the United National Party, considering the economic difficulties the people are faced with, in future managing the economy will be carried out through the National Economic Council.
