The Group of 16 SLFP MPs who left the government recently are engaged in a secret campaign to secure the top positions of the SLFP following a decision by the party central committee to appoint temporary office-bearers.
Accordingly, it is learnt that MP S.B. Dissanayake is eyeing the post of SLFP General Secretary, which is currently being held by Minister Duminda Dissanayake.
S.B. Dissanayake is currently the party Treasurer and he defeated then Minister Maithripala Sirisena to the general secretary position in an internal vote during the tenure of President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
Duminda Dissanayake, who joined Sirisena to walk out of the former Mahinda Rajapaksa regime in 2014 and supported Sirisena’s candidature at the last presidential election, was appointed as the SLFP general secretary in 2015.
The SLFP central committee last week decided that President Sirisena should appoint temporary office bearers to the party in order to carry out the proposed party reforms.
