Spanish Football Mourns Loss of Striker Jesús de Miguel After Fatal Collision

The international sporting community is in profound shock following the tragic death of 30-year-old CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel. The Madrid-born striker passed away at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Tuesday morning, November 3, 2026, less than 24 hours after sustaining severe head and chest injuries during a Segunda División fixture against FC Andorra.

The horrifying incident occurred during the seventh minute of stoppage time at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. With the score locked at 2-2 and the match nearing its conclusion, Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono charged out toward the center circle to challenge De Miguel for a high loose ball. The high-speed collision saw Owono strike De Miguel heavily in the chest and head, leaving the forward motionless on the pitch.

Medical staff from both clubs immediately rushed onto the field as distressed teammates and opponents gestured frantically for assistance. Owono was issued a straight red card for the foul, leaving Andorra down to nine men, before match officials formally abandoned the contest in the 108th minute as De Miguel received critical emergency care.

Paramedics spent nearly twenty minutes treating De Miguel on the pitch, intubating the striker before loading him into an emergency ambulance. En route to the medical center, De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest. Although paramedics managed to restore his heartbeat through cardiopulmonary resuscitation, his condition deteriorated rapidly overnight after he suffered severe neurological damage.

CD Tenerife, alongside the Association of Spanish Footballers, officially announced his passing the following morning:

”There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family and loved ones who mourn this cruel loss today.”

Tributes have poured in from across global football, with FC Andorra (co-owned by former Spanish defender Gerard Piqué) offering its deepest condolences to De Miguel’s family and the entire CD Tenerife community. Standing at 1.89 meters, the prolific Spanish forward joined Tenerife in 2025 and established himself as a central figure in the club’s frontline. Spanish football authorities are expected to hold a moment of silence across all upcoming LaLiga and Segunda División matches to honor his memory.
