Sri Lanka’s Minister of Justice and Prisons Reforms Thalatha Atukorala has decided to disband the Intelligence Unit at the country’s maximum security Welikada prison in Colombo with immediate effect.
Justice Minister Thalatha Atukorala, who visited the Welikada Prison in Colombo Thursday, has taken the decision after inquiring into various corruption and malpractices reported in the Department of Prisons.
Lately it has come to light that underworld leaders and drug traffickers jailed in the maximum security prison are continuing to operate from the Prison while communicating with their accomplices using satellite phones.
