Sri Lanka’s influential Mahanayake Theras (Chief Prelates) of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters have urged President c and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to promptly resolve the political crisis emerged after the local government elections without allowing the nation to be destabilized.
The two Chief Prelates have pointed out that the government should work unitedly to take the country forward to fulfill the promises they made.
The Mahanayake of Malwathu Chapter Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera says that the Government has a responsibility to rule the country without creating confusions.
In a letter to the President and the Prime Minister, the Chief Prelate said if the confusion resulted after the Local Government elections continued further, collapse of state administration and economic downturn are inevitable and all the parties should work unitedly to avoid such an outcome and to fulfill the promises they made to the people at the last elections.
The Chief Prelate noted that with the outcome of the election results, the confusing, unstable, and uncertain situation emerging in the country is an obstruction to the people’s progress and well-being, as well as to unity, peace and harmony.
The Mahanayake Thera also said that it is important to pay special attention to this situation and now it is necessary to act diligently to fulfill the promises given to the public in 2015 and at the general election. It is important to resolve the livelihood problems of the working class and the middle-class people, he emphasized.
The Chief Prelate said the main emphasis should be on making national, religious, cultural and economic progress, as well as building peace and unity.
Registrar of Asgiri Chapter Venerable Dr. Medagama Dhammananda Thera in a statement said that they hoped for the stability, betterment of people and security of the country.
He requested all political party leaders and groups to refrain from acting in a manner that is detrimental to the country’s stability, the economy and the country’s security.
The Venerable Thera noted that even though more than a week has elapsed since the conclusion of the Local Authority Election there has been no change in the current political environment. He hoped that the politicians will not abuse the mandate of the people by crossovers.
He said that President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa should be responsible in handling the current situation of the country and they have the responsibility to maintain stability in the country.
Venerable Dammanada Thera requested the political leaders to ensure the country’s security and work towards ensuring stability.
