Sri Lanka declares ‘Environment Week’ from today to mark World Environment Day

Sri Lanka will mark 'World Environment Day 2018', which falls on June 5, with a National Ceremony at the Independence Avenue, Kegalle on 4th June with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest. This year, the theme for World Environment Day is "Beat Plastic Pollution" which calls for people to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges. The government has declared an 'Environment Week' from 4th June and during the week the Central Environment Authority (CEA) has taken measures to regulate polythene and plastic waste disposal and raise awareness among the public, CEA Chairman Chandrarathne Pallegama said.

Muthurajawela nature preserve to be handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Department

The Central Environmental Authority says that the Muthurajawela Sanctuary can be handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Department before the end of this year. Central Environmental Authority Chairman Chandrarathne Pallegama told the Lankadeepa that the lands belonging to the wetland sacturay have been identified. Pallegama said preliminary discussions were held with the relevant state authorities including the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Land Department, Survey Department and the Department of Forest Conservation. Since the Muthurajawela sanctuary land extends into Wattala, Negombo, Katana and Ja-Ela Divisional Secretariats, the relevant Divisional Secretaries also visited participated in the discussions, Pallegama said. Five thousand civil security officers to be recruited

The Department of Civil Services says the president has instructed them to recruit 5000 civil security officers to the police force. Commissioner General of the Civil Services Department Chandrarathne Pallegama said that 2900 civil security officers have already been recruited into the police force. Theses police officers will be dispatched on police mobile patrols and other public services. The officers will be dispatched to Anuradhapura, Pollonaruwa, Ampara, Puttlam, and Trincomalee. The Commissioner General added that steps have been take to assign 480 civil security officers for the protection to archaeological sites.
