MPs Wimal Weerawansa and Jayantha Samaraweera produced before court today

Parliamentarians Wimal Weerawansa and Jayantha Samaraweera, who were issued warrants for their arrest, appeared before Colombo Chief Magistrate Court yesterday and the court recalled the arrest warrant against them. The Colombo Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe Bandara on Monday issued warrants against the two parliamentarians since they have failed to appear in Court when a case filed against them was taken up for hearing. The MPs through their lawyers informed the court that they could not appear in court Monday due to traffic congestion and apologized to the court for their absence. CID seeks advice of AG on former PC member’s threat against FCID officers

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police today informed the court that it has sought the advice of Attorney General on the threatening remarks made by the former UPFA Southern Provincial Council Minister D. V. Upul against the officers of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID). The former councilor, addressing a public gathering in Hambanthota on May 31, 2015, had allegedly threatened to stone to death the officers attached to the FCID once Mahinda Rajapaksa returned to power as the Prime Minister. DV Upul had made this statement in the presence of several UPFA parliamentarians. The suspect is charged with criminal intimidation by his statement.
