Pre-dawn Police operation: More than 1,800 suspects arrested

More than 1,800 suspects were arrested during a countrywide special police operation conducted from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. yesterday. Police Headquarters said that 14,706 police officers and 10 police dogs took part in the operation. During the four-hour operation, 586 raids were conducted on places selling illicit liquor and narcotics, Police said. They said they seized 24.278 grams of heroin, 8.522 kilograms of ganja, 26,239 litres of illicit liquor and 4309 litres of other types of liquor. On suspicion of involvement in various crimes, 772 persons were taken into custody while 92 suspects wanted in connection with various crimes were also arrested. Health trade unions poised to strike

A countrywide strike is staged by the Health Trade Union’s Collective, including nurses, today, November 22. Seventeen trade unions are to participate in the strike. The strike is staged citing several demands including salary discrepancies and the backlog of overtime payments that need to be paid to health officials. According to the Health Trade Union’s Collective representative Saman Rathnapriya, the strike will commence at 7:00 a.m today, November 21, and will continue until 7:00 a.m tomorrow.countrywide strike

Over 1000 metric tonnes of petrol distributed to fuel stations countrywide: Petroleum authorities

The Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Ltd said that 1,500 metric tonnes of petrol has been distributed to fuel stations countrywide. Director General, Sanjeewa Wijeratne, said the decision to distribute the 1,500 metric tonnes of petrol was taken to avoid a depletion of fuel. He added that the report on the stock of petrol which arrived in the country aboard the Lady Neveska Vesse, last night, will be released at 12 noon today.
