More than 1,800 suspects were arrested during a countrywide special police operation conducted from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. yesterday. Police Headquarters said that 14,706 police officers and 10 police dogs took part in the operation.
During the four-hour operation, 586 raids were conducted on places selling illicit liquor and narcotics, Police said. They said they seized 24.278 grams of heroin, 8.522 kilograms of ganja, 26,239 litres of illicit liquor and 4309 litres of other types of liquor.
On suspicion of involvement in various crimes, 772 persons were taken into custody while 92 suspects wanted in connection with various crimes were also arrested.
Police also seized six illegal firearms during the operation. In addition to raids, during the special operations police also checked vehicles.
Police booked 4,472 drivers for motor traffic offences. They also took into custody 501 persons for driving under the influence of liquor, while 559 suspects who had arrest warrants against them were also arrested.
