The appeals filed by the seven suspects, sentenced to death over the gang rape and murder of the schoolgirl Sivaloganathan Vidya, were ordered to be taken up for consideration on December 13 by the Supreme Court. The applications, demanding the exemption from the punishment of the defendants, were taken up today (09) before the three-judge bench comprising the Supreme Court Justices Eva Wanasundara, Nalin Perera and Prasanna Jayawardena. Sri Lanka's Supreme Court today rejected a fundamental rights petition filed by former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva against the Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act without proceeding. The petition was rejected by a majority of the three- judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising the Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, Justice Buwaneka Aluvihare and Justice Nalin Perera. The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court yesterday that the demarcation of provincial councils is expected to be completed before the end of January and provincial council elections could be hold after it was passed as a bill in parliament. The Supreme Court postponed the hearing of the appeal submitted by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) requesting to annul the order issued by the Appeals Court in last January ordering the students of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) medical faculty to be registered. The appeal was taken up for hearing before a three-member panel of judges Eva Wanasundera, Priyantha Jayawardena and Nalin Perera.
