Four including father arrested for giving alcohol to infant

Sri Lanka Police have arrested a father and three others for cruelty to a child following an investigation into a video appeared in social media which showed the father feeding his 13-mnth old son what appeared to be alcohol from a bottle. The video posted recently on social media websites showing a man feeding what appears to be an alcoholic beverage to the infant was brought to the attention of the IGP Pujith Jayasundera. The incident had taken place on the 14th of this month in the Meegalewa - Ganangamuwa area. Action to be taken against promoters of hate speech

The government has decided to closely monitor and crackdown on hate speech being promoted on social media. “All communal hate speech posts via social media would be curbed. One of decision made at today’s special ministerial meeting,” Minister of National Coexistence Dialogue and Official Languages, Mano Ganesan said in a Tweet. Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera has directed the police to act against individual who makes statements promoting hate speech. Police have reportedly been given the power to initiate legal action against anyone promoting hate speech on social media.

Special island wide police operation nabs over 3000 for traffic violations

A special four-hour operation launched Tuesday (30) night covering all police divisions across the island has made over 3000 arrests for traffic violations and seized consignments of illegal drugs and alcohol. The special police operation under the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera was carried out between 11:00 p.m. Tuesday and 3:00 a.m. Wednesday by all police stations in the country. Police Headquarters said that 3,115 motorists who violated the road rules were nabbed during the four-hour operation. During the operation, 20,913 vehicles were checked by police at 1,308 roadblocks and inspected 42,673 persons. Tri forces to provide security on the day of local government elections

Chairman of Sri Lanka's Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said that on the day of the local government elections, the tri forces will be deployed for security duties. The elections for local government bodies will be held on 10th February. He said that this decision was made in a discussion held Wednesday with the Inspector General of the Police Pujith Jayasundera. The Sri Lankan government said on Tuesday that it has allocated Rs. 50 million in 2018 to strengthen the tourist police force in order to enhance the safety of tourists visiting the island. The police say 41 suspects were arrested in connection with the attacks that took place in Jaffna. The police headquarters states that three teams have been deployed to apprehend those involved. Special island wide police operation nabs over 800 wanted criminals and fugitives

A special four-hour operation launched last night covering all police divisions across the island has nabbed over 800 wanted criminals and suspects with arrest warrants. The special police operation under the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera was carried out between 11:00 p.m. Friday and 3:00 a.m. Saturday by all police stations in the country with the participation of 16,362 police officers. As a result of the operation, 758 people with arrest warrants and 86 suspects wanted for crimes have been arrested. Another 962 persons have been arrested on suspicion. The operation carried out 948 drugs and illicit liquor raids. Three illegal firearms have also been seized. The police also cited 5,744 traffic violations during the island wide operation. ...
