UNP backbenchers meet to discuss a solution, show support to PM

A meeting of the United National Party (UNP) backbench parliamentarians has taken place at the Temple Trees Saturday to discuss a solution to the present political stalemate. All UNP MPs representing the backbench of the parliament have attended the meeting.

Expressing views to the media after the meeting, parliamentarian Thushara Indunil Amarasena said that a group of 15-20 backbench MPs yesterday with the aim of strengthening the Prime Minister and to determine on the future course of action.

They have pointed out that they are unable as a party to isolate the leadership at this instance. They aalso said that they would not allow the removal of the leader.

The MPs have added that all are with the Prime Minister at this occasion. They further said that they are extremely confident that all the 106 members representing the party in parliament are with him at this moment. They expressed optimism on the support of a group of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as well.

Parliamentarian Bandula Bandarigoda said that they have exchanged opinions of certain problems. They have also said that the telephones have no respite with people calling and they have discussed the present political crisis with all of them.

The parliamentarians stressed that the government will go forward and that there is no dispute in this connection.
