A group of UNP MPs is reportedly preparing to stage a protest in parliament if Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala takes the chair during the House debate on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on April 4th.
According to Irida Mawbima, the decision was taken at a meeting of a group of party strongmen, taking into consideration Sumathipala’s involvement in obtaining signatures of the SLFP MPs for the no-confidence motion and the campaign launched against the Prime Minister by a newspaper owned by his family.
The UNPers have also taken into consideration Sumathipala’s action as the deputy speaker, where he has attended a media briefing of the SLFP, where Minister S.B. Dissanayake had criticized the Prime Minister.
