Disaster Management Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya says that action will be taken to provide immediate compensation to the people who have been deprived of lands and appealing for compensation due to the garbage dump collapse in Meethotamulla last year.
Participating in a meeting held at the Ministry of Disaster Management Thursday (19th) regarding the Meethotamulla garbage dump collapse, the Minister said there were about 40 vehicles damaged due to the collapse of the dump and some cannot even produce the documents regarding the vehicles. As a result, the livelihoods of a large number of people have been severely affected.
The Minister instructed the officials to obtain relevant information expeditiously through a special committee of the Department of Motor Traffic and take necessary steps to compensate the owners for the damaged vehicles.
Minister Siyambalapitiya requesting the officials to submit a quick report on a minor breach observed in the garbage dump Wednesday connected with the officers who had visited the site Thursday during the discussion and confirmed that there is no risk at the garbage dump.
The Minister also instructed the relevant authorities to extend the housing assistance provided to the people who have not taken the government-provided housing but receiving assistance until next month.
Deputy Minister of Disaster Management, Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management, Colombo District Secretary and several government officials participated in this discussion.
