Twelve suspects who assaulted foreign tourists in the South remanded

A Sri Lankan court Thursday remanded 12 suspects arrested in connection with two separate incidents of assaults on foreign tourists visiting Southern beaches in the Mirissa and in Midigama areas.

Matara Magistrate’s Court remanded six suspects who were arrested for assaulting and sexually abusing a group of Dutch and British tourists in the Mirissa Beach in Weligama on the 08th of this month when they were produced in the court Thursday.

Further investigations are being carried out into the incident and three more suspects were arrested Wednesday and remanded. They were due to be produced for an identification parade Thursday.

However, the identification parade was not held Thursday as the victimized foreigners had left the country and the magistrate ordered to bring the tourists back to the island at the government’s expense for the identification parade. Until then the suspects were re-remanded, The suspects were remanded until May 3rd.

Meanwhile, another six suspects arrested over the assault causing injuries to five Israeli nationals in the Midigama Tourism Zone in Weligama on the 15th of April were produced in the Matara Magistrate’s Court Thursday. The Magistrate ordered that they be remanded until the 26th of this month.
