A complaint has been lodged by the National Movement for Consumer Protection with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) on blocking the access to the social media platforms such as Facebook, Viber and Whatsapp.

Accordingly, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) of Sri Lanka, in the interests of national security, access to certain social media sites and messaging platforms was restricted until further notice.
Chairman of the National Movement for Consumer Protection Ranjith Vithanage has lodged the complaint citing the President’s Secretary and Chairman of the TRC Chairman Austin Fernando and Defense Secretary Kapila Waidyaratna.
However, the government announced that the restriction will be lifted from Saturday.
