The Attorney General today objected to the request made by former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake to relax the travel ban imposed on him to the Colombo High Court.
The Health Minister of the former UPFA government has made the request stating that he would like to attend his daughter’s graduation in Australia.
The Attorney General on 9th September 2016 filed charges against Attanayake in the Colombo High Court on producing a document with forged signatures of the then common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena and the then opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe during the 2015 presidential election campaign.
The document was alleged to be a secret agreement between the UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and the then common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena.
Attanayake was charged under the Presidential Elections Act for displaying the forged document to the media, thereby affecting the candidate Sirisena’s presidential campaign.
The court imposed a travel ban on him when he was released on bail in December 2016.
Submitting a motion through his lawyer, Attanayake informed the court that his daughter’s graduation is on December 13 and requested the court to relax travel restrictions allowing him to travel to Australia from 10 December to 31 December.
However, the Attorney General, who objected to the request, stated that the case against Attanayake will continue daily from the 4th to the 12th of December.
Colombo High Court Judge Vikum Kaluarachchi ordered the application be considered on the 4th December.
