Govt reaches out to caged animals – zoos to change living conditions

“Zoos will no longer keep the animals caged,” said the Department of National Zoological Gardens.

According to Director General Dhammika Malsinghe, steps have been taken following the decision made by the government to stop  animal cruelty.

Furthermore, steps have been taken to allow  animals to be kept in a free moving environment. Thus, elephants at the Pinnawala Zoo and Elephant Orphanage are now allowed to roam within the premises without confinement.

“Preparations are underway to create free moving environment for the animals at the Dehiwala zoo, said Director General Dhammika Malsinghe.
