Attorney General Dappula de Livera , speaking on revamping the prison system, vowed strict enforcement of laws on any offenders, be it inmates or prison officers.
He made these remarks during his visit to the Center for Research and Training in Corrections of the Welikasa Prison this morning.
“Unfortunately, there are corrupted prison officers in the system. The prisons have become a playground of criminals today,” the Attorney General said.
Addressing the gathering further, the Attorney General stated that prisons have turned out to be training schools to create next-level criminals.
Serious crimes are being organized inside the prison system, the Attorney General pointed out, adding that inmates and prison officers are shielding each other. He emphasized the need to root out corrupted officers from the prison system.
He also noted the importance of developing a proper procedure that ensures the protection of those who provide tip-offs.
