IMF reveals position on Sri Lanka situation

The Government of Sri Lanka has not yet made a request for financial assistance, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said.

The Director of the Communications Department (COM) at the IMF Gerry Rice said despite Sri Lanka not having made any such request yet, the IMF stands ready to discuss options if requested.

He further said the institution will continue to closely monitor economic and policy developments in the country.

Gerry Rice clarified that a staff team from the institution in Colombo has only completed Article IV consultations.

He said the consultations will now be discussed by the Executive Board probably later this month or towards the end of this month.

Gerry Rice said that the IMF’s technical assistance mission had aimed at strengthening the macro-fiscal unit at the Ministry of Finance as part of its capacity development activities.

He added that the programme was conducted virtually and has currently concluded.
