“It will take over a year for the impeachment” TNA MP MA Sumanthiran said responding to a question from a Twitter user about impeaching President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
To impeach a President, the Supreme Court is required to conduct an inquiry into the grounds on which the impeachment motion was moved. If the apex court finds that the allegations are indeed true, its report is then put before parliament and only then is the impeachment voted on. A two-thirds majority in parliament is required to impeach a president.
TNA MP suggests that this process could take over a year. However responding to another user MP Sumanthiran denied media reports which claimed that TNA has decided not to support the no confidence motion against the Government.
“That’s wrong. Don’t spread false stories. We have NOT DECIDED on our course of action. We must know what will happen after the NCM is carried, before we take that decision” he added.
Not like the impeachment process, the opposition only needs a simple majority i.e. the support of at least 113 legislators in the 225-seat parliament for the no-confidence motion to succeed.
