The Mayor of Jaffna, V Manivannan was arrested by around 2:30 this (08) morning on charges of attempting to resurrect the LTTE.
Police allege that uniforms worn by the Jaffna Municipal Council task force are similar to those formerly worn by the LTTE’s police force.

Manivannan was summoned and interrogated by the Police for 3 hours on Wednesday (06) regarding the uniforms.
He was told by the Police to halt the task forces’ duties and hand over the uniforms which he carried out the next day.
Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) leader, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam said the party condemns the arrest and echoed calls for Mayor of Jaffna, V Manivannan’s release.

The Mayor of Toronto, John Tory and Mayor of Brampton Patrick Brown called for the release of Mr Manivannan.
