A tense situation erupted at the Mahara Prison this evening (29), the reason for the unrest is still unknown.
According to Hiru TV, a prison inmate died when prison officers opened fire to control the tense situation.
“Currently we are seeing a massive fire from the distance, earlier we heard many gunshot firing” area resident told NewsWire.
Earlier today, 183 inmates of Mahara prison tested positive for Covid-19 increasing the number of CV-19 infections at Sri Lanka’s prisons 1,091.
5 injured inmates are being treated at the Ragama hospital.
The Prison Department said that 5 special STF teams have been deployed to control the situation.
Ministry of Prison Reforms said that they have appointed a committee headed by the Ministry secretary to investigate the situation.
