A discussion between livestock producers, organisations and representatives and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena was held recently at the Prime Minister’s Office in Colombo.
The issues discussed at the meeting included the measures that could be taken to increase the production of local livestock, reduce the problems faced by livestock producers and provide products at an affordable price to the people.
Pointing out the importance of a healthy human resource for a country, the Prime Minister highlighted that the price of eggs should be reduced, so that the people can purchase eggs since more nutrients can be obtained from the consumption of eggs.
President of the Egg Producers’ Association Sarath Ratnayake said that if the price of chicken feed and fuel are reduced, the price of eggs can be reduced.
Prime Minister Gunawardena pointed out that the Government has paid more attention to strengthening the domestic production industry and that by increasing livestock production, the people’s concerns over lack of nutrition can be solved.
The Prime Minister further said that in order to overcome the economic challenges faced by the country, a great responsibility is placed on the local production industries, and with the intervention of the government, efforts are being taken to raise the domestic livestock production industry in rural areas.
Trade Minister Naleen Fernando, former Minister of State, Member of Parliament D.B. Herath, Secretary to the Prime Minister Anura Dissanayake, professors in the field, Heads of Government Institutions related to livestock and officials of the Livestock Producers’ Association were also present.
